Updated Insert Design Handbook

We have posted recently a complete revamp of the ESA PSS 03 1202 Insert design handbook (1987). This new document is called the ECSS-E-HB-32-22A Space Engineering Insert Design Handbook (2011). This document does not contain all the allowable data included in the earlier document but it does have some useful specific test results and a better explanation of the testing. The new document also has an expanded set of analytical methods, better design guidelines and is generally an improvement in presentation and layout.

Inserts in sandwich panels are problematic for the analyst working on smaller projects as smaller companies do not usually have proprietary test data available. These two public domain references give the analyst some confidence in understanding the critical design parameters and prediction of strength.

  1. Hi Richard,
Is this version open to share?
I had a copy of the original from my space work and I’m delighted to see this new update. This really is THE reference for inserts in panels, particularly for interaction effects. Most of the time this level of depth is not necessary but when your design is a bit more highly loaded there’s no better place to go.
    Thanks for sharing!
    Andrew B.

    • Hey Andrew,

as far as I know any unclassified material that is wholly funded with public money is in the public domain. so I regard this as being in the public domain until we receive notice that it is not. Feel free to share.
(Sorry for the delay in replying – just catching up)

      Cheers,
