Relaxation of Clamp-up Forces for Bolts installed in Composite Laminates

August 27, 2015

This was another question that came up on a project we are working on. I have heard of this laminate creep effect under clamp up before but have not seen any quantification of the effect. As I had to find an answer to the question I set off to ask Google and see if I could find something useful and I came across this document – and not much else. This document does have some results for a variety of laminates – and different resin systems and it gives a limited picture of how this phenomenon  could affect bolted joints in composite laminate.

As always, caution should be used with taking any values directly and all assumptions should be confirmed by test during your development program.
